In the Beginning
SmartMunkee began life in Cornwall, UK. It was born from a love of design and colour in clothing.
In a short time we have gone from strength to strength. Our collection of designs has expanded, whilst maintaining the qualities that make us unique...simple, striking, thoughtful designs.

Now SmartMunkee are rapidly becoming known as the indepedent T-shirt design company that deliver unique and eye-catching designs. We avoid using images from public galleries. We toil long and hard to ensure that every shirt is designed from scratch to increase your wearing pleasure. Our main driving force is to ensure the customer has a T-shirt to be proud of, a shirt that is going to get noticed, a shirt that is going to provoke a reaction. We don't try to shock or offend to get attention...we use a combination of colour, clever design and high impact imagery.
The Design Process
It's not an accident that our designs are striking yet strangely simplistic. This is actually a very time consuming process. It is acheived by a series of clever techniques we call 'reverse engineering'.
First we create a detailed image, in much the same way as any other designer. To many this would be considered the final product, but to SmartMunkee this is simply the 'concept'. It's now the real fun begins...
The image is now analyzed further, by expert eyes and by clever technology. Important 'informational' layers are extracted. These help the viewer's eye perceive the image even though there is less visual information present.
There are good reasons to 'reverse engineer' designs. First, it enables us to use more striking print methods such as the durable Flex Print. Second, it means a design needs careful thought before translating to a T-shirt and this offers an opportunity to ensure that it commands the visual impact we require for our SmartMunkee T-shirts.
